trans cooler install

Was in NC mountains near Ashville last week. Going up and down the mountains i noticed i was typically around 180-200. Highest was about 210. Wasn’t towing but had 5 people in the car. Driving home once i got to flat lands i was around the 160s which judging by my commute looks to be my typical range for my 2017 PIU.

Those mountains are great to drive around, especially Tail of the Dragon and similar roads in that area. I am surprised your TFT went down to the 160s unless the ambient temps were really really cold. What engine do you have in your 2017 PIU? Is it the 3.7 or the 3.5 EcoBoost?
The 3.7 runs the same trans cooler as the N/A 3.5 (sits on top of the A/C condenser) but with an extra cooler in the middle/front. The 3.5 EcoBoost (at least the civilian version) uses a single thicker cooler mounted low on the A/C condenser.

But the Mercon LV and ULV fluids and the respective transmissions are designed to run warmer than the old Type F, Dexron, Mercon, and Mercon V based transmissions where the old addage "keep the trans fluid below 180F" used to be true.

I was surprised as i typically don’t look at it but i have it as one of the data log points on the BDX and was keeping track while i was up in the mountains. Had the trans fluid flushed late last summer after buying it. Was going to check the color today.

On the CD6 Explorers with the 10R60, and the CD4 6F55/8F57 transverse applications (Fusion Sport/MKZ/Conti/Edge ST), there's a coolant block on the transmission that has engine coolant routed to help warmup the ATF as well as regulate the trans fluid temp. So the end result is that it rarely if ever gets cooled below the engine coolant temperature once everything is warmed up. So I wouldn't worry too much about the trans fluid being in the 200F-220F range.

This is also the reason it isn't a good idea to flush these transmissions. If it is done without the transmission fully up to operating temperature then the new fluid that you think is circulating through the transmission and replacing the old fluid is not occurring. It is just getting to the temperature regulator and being routed straight out of the transmission. The old fluid never gets replaced. The 6R60/6R80 transmissions have a similar type of transmission fluid temperature regulation.
