hey guys,
Is the filter on the transmission a take off piece that can be cleaned and reused, or does it need to be replaced when servicing? Had a 96 Jeep that just had a screen to clean and reuse type.
thanks

I would guess you could clean it, but the fine screen in it is not accessible, so swishing solvent around in it is about all that could be done.

For the couple bucks they cost, replace it! imp

thanks, thats all I needed to know.

Guys,
I called a couple local Ford dealers to check prices on a trans fluid flush:
-one dealer charged $169 for fluid change. For a fluid and filter change they wanted $189
-another dealer charged $199 but did not change the filter. They wanted another $60-$70 to also change the filter.

Shouldn't the filter always be changed? I was surprised that some didnt change it and that the 2nd dealer charged so much to also change it. Have you guys had similar experiences with dealers? Seems to me you would always want to change the filter just like when you change the engine oil.
Thanks,
Gregg

In reality, unless hunks of foreign material are found in the oil pan, and the fluid drained out is not deteriorated in appearance, or contains shimmering metal dust in it, replacing the filter is not necessary.

But I tend to replace them, anyway! The auto trans. under normal conditions does not generate debris as does an internal combustion engine, so engine's oil filters become dirty during normal use, but transmission filters do not.

What he said. I also replace them as I am unaware of any fluid specification that would be used to clean and filter without damaging it. That said, tranny filters are only there to remove the particles that would interfere with tranny function if not removed.
