The 1998 has a 5R55E. You have an A4LD. Some parts might interchange but not the whole transmission (unless you have a separate electronic controller). Drop the pan, and check the Z link along with the rooster comb, and other related parts.

so it might be in my best to find one for 91-94..Do you know how easy it is to replace the park pawl??

All of these parts should be easy to replace with the exception of the case pin. Use flat screwdrivers like a wedge to grab & remove it. It's a good opportunity to replace the case shift seal if it's leaking.

would that mean that i need to drop the trans out of the truck??? Or is it something that i can drop the pan and do it from there??

could my shift cable be messed up and thats why its not engaging into park because i can put it in park let off the brake and then its starts to creap forwards

ok i tried taking it to a trans shop to find out whats wrong with it and for them to rebuild my trans then its going to cost me 1500 and there is no way i am going to be able to afford that right now..SO to keep having fun and folowling my explorers dream i am going to have to tackle my trans myself...

I guess i will start off buy buying one from a juny yard/private seller.WHat should i look for before i buy it???I think i will be able to do this by myself i did a trans swap in my 96 dodge neon so how hard can it be??I had a few questions like when installing everything what does it mean when they say to install the converter to the trans making sure the converter hub is fully engaged in the pump gear??IS there a FOrm that i can look at here for replacing my trans???Please Help!!!!

if anybody lives in the baltimore/annapolis or even pg county area and they have a auto trans for a 94 xlt 4x4 i would be willing to take it off your hands!!!

Most trans shops just want to pop a rebuilt in for an easy profit...Mostly gone are the days when a trans show will fix a minor problem..."Fluid and filter change....nah...you need a rebuilt trans"...Search for a reputable shop that may do the work...It's getting tough out there !

how would i go about replacing the park pawl(will not stay in park)thats what i think it is with the trans still in the truck???

Or is it easier just buying a used trans at a junkyard and sticking it in..I am on a tight budget and i need to get this thing fixed.I will have to take on the work to save money i cant afford a trans shop

i just got off the phone with a shop from that site and they are telling me to replace the park paw in my 94 xlt auto that the hole trans has to come out is that true?Brooklynbay is that true what you said about repairing it with the trans in the truck??They want 3800 for a rebuild!! HOly Crap i got under 700 to pull this job off

Don't go to that place. Check this link for parts: https://www.wittrans.com/Schematic.aspx?Transmission=A4LD/4R44E/4R55E/5R55E&Schematic=5

i know what people feel like when having a heart attack???lol...i really hope i can pull this off i am still debating on out with the old and in with a used tranny or take my chances and try to replace the park pawl and hope to god its my problem??

ok good news i just got found a trans from a 94 xlt and it only has 83k for $175??My questions are should i buy a new TC or not? What should i be watching for when i go to take the old one out and put the new one in??BY the way whats a 4.0 pushrod engine thats what i think i have and will the a4ld fit??

You have a 4.0L OHV engine. Flush the cooler lines, and install a rebuilt torque converter. Remove the pan from the junkyard transmission, and check the fluid. Replace the filter. It might be cheaper, and less work to repair your existing transmission while it's still in the vehicle.

well with mine have 187,000+ i think its time for a new one or atleast one half its age as in miles.I am preatty sure i can do all it in one weekend.I just would like some advice to make sure i get everything right?

i would love to fix it with it in the truck it would save me alot of time but i cant find anything to show me what i am taking off and what not to once i get into the pan i seen the diagram you posted but do i replace all that stuff?? I would say its looking more towards using the one with 83,000 on it?Would there be a write up with pics around here somewhere???

There is a sticky thread called the A4LD rebuild diary on the top of the transmission section. It has many step by step photos. I recommend reading it before you work on the transmission. # 69 in my list of useful threads has additional information.
