I just purchased a 1999 Ranger with a 4 cyl, automatic, the trans won't move unless the overdrive is off, it goes forward and reverse, the overdrive won't turn on unless I put it in neutral, if I get up to about 50 I can put in neutral, turn the overdrive on and put it back into drive and it will go into overdrive, but when I slow down I have to turn overdrive off before it will down shift. Since it goes ok with the overdrive off I thought it might be something electrical, anyone have any ideas?

How's the fluid, full and good color?

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome the the group! The symptoms you described are how a failed OD sprag will act. Unfortunately the trans has to come out for the repair.

Checked the fluid today, it was a little low, but red, looked good, added about 1/2 pint, it did move with overdrive on but not like it should.

Is this a rebuild issue? I thought about rebuilding it but figured I would try changing fluid and filter first, would this be a waste of time and money?

Waste of money in my opinion. Maybe someone else has some ideas.
