Trans not engaging some times

I have a 97 Limited with 5.0l and AWD. I the mornings as I leave the house I have to stop at an intersection (the road has a slight rise to the street so my X is on a small angle) and if I am there more than 30 seconds when I start to pull out the stupid thing will roll backwards. I step on the gas and nothing happens except the rev's go up to about 2500 and some times the trans engages and some times I have to hit the breaks, rev the engine until the trans engages. It only happens in the mornings at this spot and after that the thing is fine. Fluid and filter has been changed and it's full to the mark on the dipstick. Has any one experienced this and found a cause for it? I'm stumped.

The fluid level varies with the temperature so it may sometimes appear to be full when it's a drop low. Did you try a band adjustment? Did you use Mercon V fluid?

Thanks BB for the response. It does have Mercon fluid but I have not tried a band adjustment. I'll look into that this weekend. I'll double check the transmission fluid level in the AM so it will be cold.
