2002 explorer xlt 4x4 v6
So lets start off with the obvious i have a 2002 explorer xlt auto 4x4 with v6 with the 5r55w trans and 198k on it i absolutly love it...ive had the notorious O.D blinking light with hard 3rd to 4th shift for about 6 months when that started i checked the fluid it was low so i filled till it came out of the allen key bolt on the side. So now my problem while driving down i95 i go to jump out into to traffic and my truck did a very hard 3rd to 4th shift that it knocked my radar detector off the window and i lost my drive gear i did still have first gear though and got it to a parking lot safe once put into park i couldnt get any gears including reverse and when in reverse it only revs to 3000 rpms and bounces like its hitting the rev limiter and feels like its binding up...its been sitting for 3 weeks and i went to go clean it out incase it got broken into....so i put it in drive and it moved so i tried to back up and the reverse still does the same as before...my truck is 200 miles away from home where i can replace it or just cut my losses and skip out on a hefty tow bill and junk the truck i was told it my transmission and or transmission and transfer case which nothing is cheap about this....whats confusing me is how reverse is acting i havent read any article that says that and ive been looking at the forms for almost 2 weeks and google

Man this sucks, I know that bill will be hefty if you tow, you know someone with a truck you could borrow and maybe get a dolly from uhaul, you get it back home and if your handy with a tool set I am sure you could find a used tran from somewhere on line.. Just a though and good luck!

Where is your truck? I will be coming up 95 near DC with my trailer Saturday and might be able to help if you out if your anywhere near there.

Im actually up north in west chester new yorkwhich sucks and yea ill be able to borrow a truck from work and i called uhaul today but thanks guys i now also have to figure out if i have to disconnect the front drive shaft cuz of the 4x4 auto if my transfer car is not screwed i dont want to.

If you are getting a tow dolly just take the rear shaft off. You don't want to drive long distance pulling the truck with the trans just in N, it could damage the trans even more.

From the sounds of it there was an "over pressure event" which probably felt like being rear-ended. That damaged the pump, and potentially the torque converter. I would be willing to bet you need a rebuild, which will run ~$2k.

What is this "allen-bolt on the side". Is it on the side of the pan, or the body of the transmission? My 2002 XLT 5r55w (v8) has drain/fill plug on bottom of drain pan; to add fluid you pump it up into the pan, until it just starts to drip back out. That's about 2" deep in the pan (with the engine running). How much fluid did you have to add?

Rply

There is a plug about half way up the trans on the drives side that i used (a guy at the ford dealer i called said to if i didnt have the tool to use on the pan) i believe it was 3/4 of the bottle with the engine hot and running...transmissions are my kroyptonite they dont really last with the miles i drive i practically live in it....also please dont kill me im just wondering is there a real diffrence between the 2wd version and 4wd version besides the tail shaft end
