I have a '91 Explorer. The problem is that when I put it in drive it does nothing. Reverse works fine but it does nothing for a few minutes then it might go in drive. Now once it catches in drive it works normal although it shifts hard. Fluid level is good.
I have heard that if the alternator is bad it could cause the trans to not shift Properly. I believe the Alt is bad as the lights and the charging gage flicker or pulse. Any truth to this?

Do not have the money to replace all the parts, so want to narrow the choice.

take your explorer to a autozone or kragen and have them test the alt they should be able to do it in the car also have your battery tested. its free

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't see how an alternator would affect the trans going into gear. Have you checked your fluid level, and when was the last time the trans was flushed and the filter replaced?

change the fluid & filter but i wouldnt do a flush if you have over 150k

Thanks for the reply

the trans is electrically shifted or so I have read and I have heard that if the voltage is low do to a bad Alt or battery it will not shift.

the trans is an A4LD and just changed the filter and fluid but not better.

I was wondering about the vacuum diaphragm, if that is bad would that cause the trans not to shift.

The trans is only electronically shifted from 3-4 and the tourqe converter lockup. All other gears are mechanically shifted. Probably the forwand bands are worn or its bleeding fluid off somewhere internally. You are probably going to need a rebuild.

You can check to see if there is trans fluid in the vacuum line for the diaphram. If there is then its bad.

I am not a trans expert, but it sounds to me that the problem is inside.

Let us know what happens.

A4LD Trans Question Again

OK I am new to the forum and would appreciate some help with my problem.

Here is the problem: I have a 91 Explorer 4x4 A4LD, the trans shifts into reverse but when you put it into Drive it does not go. if you leave it in Drive and rev up the RPM it will finally go into gear. Once the trans hooks up in Drive it operates normal until I shift it into neutral or reverse or put it in park.

I have changed the
Fluid and filter and
Adjusted the bands

My real question is is there a solenoid or some kind of sensor that would cause this issue? I can not believe the trans is gone totally bad as it works when it does go in gear.

I really have enjoyed reading this forum (Have spent hours reading it)and have found it very informative.

Tanks for any help you may have,

Ed
This has been a great help so far

BrooklynBay,
Sorry about that lost the first post in all the information and could not find it.
Saved the link now, should not happen again.

Is there a detailed pot on how to check the pressures?
Seems I read one somewhere but can not find it either.
I am about as good at this computer stuff as I am with Automatic transmissions:-))

There it is :-))
Thanks My brain was being overloaded with all the information I found here.

Oh by the way the links to the two articles do not work. These are the Gears Magazine articles.

Can the valve body be removed with the trans still in the vehicle?
I think I'm having the same problem that TN Explorer had back in '05, the sticky thread in BrooklynBay's "list of useful threads".

It might be a good idea to read the sticky threads on rebuilding valve bodies before attempting this kind of repair if you are not confident on doing it. You could purchase a remanufactured valve body from Central Valve Bodies with all of the updates.

I have never worked on a trans before but I feel very confident I can do it with no problem. I have rebuilt motors and done performance upgrades to motors, just never had to work on transmissions.I have swapped out trans before but this will be my first taking one apart and working on the inside of one. A buddy of mine pulled one from a junk yard and made it near bullet proof. So confidence is not the problem. Not wanting to screw it up and costing more money then necessary maybe the issue I'm having. I always research whatever I do before I start, so I don't start blind.
This is why I love this forum as there is a wealth of information here. you guys have been great , thank you for sharing your thoughts, and information.

Is there a web page for Central Valve Bodies? Can not find one searching google.

Ok i have a 1997 Ford Explorer Sport 2WD. I just had the transmission replaced.

There is slow take off and it seems like im in 3 or 4th gear at 30-45mph.

i went to autozone and got some trouble codes looked at.

it says: There are 4
shift solenoid circuit condition
circut condition
Shift solenoid 2 circuit condition
Shift solenoid 1 circuit condition

i need help on figuring out what to do and how to do it.
