Hello all,
Just bought a 05 explorer 6 months ago.:) It has 39k on it now. Was wondering when the first transmission service should be.

Thanks,
Rob

My owners manual says 60K, but there are ALOT of differing opinions. I hope I dont end up making the wrong decision but im not gonna do it till I get to 55-60k.

i try to do mine every 30-40k miles (closer to the 30k mark than 40)

Hey all,
I do agree with ya. I like the 30k option. When I checked my manual, at 30k the filter should be done on the torqthrust trans and the ???100 trans. Unless the 5r55 is a torqthrust, I didnt see when to change it

i have an 02 mountaineer. has 123000 miles on it. i bought it used and had 96000 dont know when tranny was serviced last? should i go ahead and do it? and how big of a project is it and how pricey?

Good job in making it last!

Good job in making it last!:)
To have someone do it for you, its just under $100. I like having it done for me because, its a kinda messy job.

can you do it yourself? i have looked under the car and it just seems like a lot of work. cant seem to find the fill hole?????

u can but personally i think its a *****. Id rather just pay the guys at the tranny place the 60-80 bucks to do it

ok. so just take it to a tranny place and get a service done on it?
one thing i have noticed is if i brake really really hard the tranny shifts into N and wont shift back into D for like 10-15 secs. i kind of have to rev the engine up just a little. could it just be low on fluid?

low or dirty fluid may be the culprit. not sure about your 02, but my 04 is a "sealed" system, no tranny fluid dip stick to check fill level or for dis- coloration. you need a special tool, (cheap, do a search on this forum) to refill the tran pan. there is an excellant how to on this site, complete with photos. otherwise, take it to a trust local shop. I know my local Ford has a special going for $99. Don't pay for the transfer case fluid change, you can do it yourself for about $9, takes 5 minutes.

One other item, if you do your own, dropping pan, filter change, and refill your probably only changing about 1/3 of the fluid in the tranny. some say do a flush, others say NO, seems to me the debate may rest on weather the return lines are drained as it cyclec thru.. do a search on flush or not debate and make your own decision. I personally would not, but ironically my local Ford says they've been doing it for years, with no negative issues... if it were me, and Ford did my tranny flush, I'd keep my reciept if it developed problems later it should be on them...
