did you buy it from a private seller or a dealer? either way if they advertised it with everything working, and did not put as-is, you can legally return it under a lemon law for your state. of course it depends on what state you live in. As for the transmission I have no idea, if the T-case, and transmission are gone, you will most likely invest way more money into the truck then that is worth, and unless you have some special bond to it it is not worth it.

Private owner as is, just tryin figure whats wrong

Ok, sorry, that sucks, I had the same sort of situation with my Ranger, I bought it the guy said everything was perfect, turned out he just dumped a bunch of Bars stop leak into the rad to stop a leak caused by a crack in the cylinder head. new heads where $400 a piece, and the truck was only worth about $1000, so I just sold it to my local auto wreck for $300 and took it as a lost cause.

Also to help you out. try first figuring out what transmission you have, I believe there is a Vin decoder on this part of the forum to find out which one you have. then look at the huge list of stickys that are on your transmission. Once again, I am currently having problems with mine, and I found many of the problems are solved with a fluid change, although yours sounds more severe then that.

Trans help

HI,I have the same problem took it to ORIELLYS and scanned it got the
same #2 solenoid code, but the explorer was given to my son because it
needed a heater core replaced,if we had taken it the FORD DEALER it
would have cost $1150 and 9hrs labor,it took us three days and 3 people to fix it (2)+O2 sensors, spark plugs, our chore will be changing trany filter
and fluid hope that cures the 1/2 shift problem thinking about putting in
AMSOIL but can not find out if that is good or bad,it maybe too slick.
one other problem maybe adjusting the bands.

Sound like you need a tranny valve body and a rebuilt transfer case. I brought mine for 500.00 knewing it needed a tranny and transfer case. I rebuilt the transfer case and tranny myself and the parts cost me almost 1000.00 not including my labor of 2 days. So the "new Ex" cost me 1500.00 so far. I did it with 2 sets of Rhino ramps, mountain of tools and a bottle of Advil.
