I have a 1993 Explorer. I went to have the 4x4 looked at (it clicks when the button is pressed but nothing happens) and was told the Actuator was bad. Now I did search, and I *think* I found the answer, but just want to make sure, the actuator is NOT part of the shift motor, correct?

Also, does the actuator really cost $500 from Ford?

We commonly dont refer to anything as the "actuator" in the transfer case but if we did, then it would probably refer to the shift motor since the shift motor is what starts the movement of a few mechanical parts which eventually engages 4wd (aka 4HI) and/or 4Low.

No way in heck would I pay $500 for the whole transfer case. There are topics on rebuilding this from what I understand. I can pull a whole tcase from my junkyard for $60.

The most common failure of the t-case shift motor can be fixed for free. Read through the 4x4 troubleshooting thread (it's a sticky at the top of the Stock 91-94 forum) and pay special attention to the Shift motor rebuild thread
A brand-new or re-manufactured 4x4 shift motor should run less than $100.
