Transfer Case Flange

Hey guys,
I've been trying to figure out what the clunking in my front end was that happened whenever I shift into drive or reverse and I finally took it to a dealer to get checked out (Laird Noller Ford in Lawrence, Kansas) and they told me that its the "transfer case flange" that's broken. Total cost is around $234 for the part and $409 total including labor. First, can somebody explain to me what that flange is? And second, does that sound like a reasonable amount to have to pay for this??

I can't tell you what it is

And I just took my 97 transfer case apart. There is a rear "flange" that can be removed very easily that wouldn't cost that much. The case must be opened up to get the front flange. That labor cost is very reasonable to drop and open up the transfer case. Terminology can get very loose with a service manager. In my vehicle, the rear of the aluminum case has an internal "flange" that holds the output shaft bearing that became loose. You could move the rear driveshaft up and down. This may be a common problem. I fixed mine with a cut up beer can. That won't be permanant. $234 seems like what a replacement rear half case would cost. I've heard this flange story a couple times. Maybe you could find out what it really is and tell us.

Don't know how this got here and can't get rid of it.
 






I wish I could really find out for myself but I'm at school and have no access to ramps, very many tools, or anything. I hate it, I can't even change my own oil here. I feel helpless but I guess I gotta pay the dealer :mad:
 






Just got back from the dealer, $435.86 and its fixed. They showed me the broken part, the old flange (looks just like a pipe flange but it was teeth instead of threads) and it was worn down and that was causing the slippage as it grabbed the driveshaft. Couldn't have fixed that myself, just gotta bite the bullet and pay it. :(
