Transfer case help!!!

I recently went off-roading in my explorer and when i got back when it is in just regular everyday 2wd when i hit the gas it makes thumping noise i thought it might be the c/v so took time and replaced those but its stil there so i think it might be that the t-case is not engauging right but i am not sure any ideas? anything would help now.

Well I can tell you that my 96 xlt was doing the same thing, untill about 2 hours ago when the transfer case blew up in my driveway and parts and lots of fluid came out all over the place, now I am searching for a transfer case.
