well i was out at the lake this weekend having some fun. and was flagged down by some one that was stuck. so i put it in 2 low. (no front gears yet) and tired to get him out, but i was un able to pull him out. my problem is, that when i take of from a start now i get a clunk clunk clunk noise. and when i engage the t-case the shift motor make a funny noise. and when i engage low rang it grinds.
my question is. what did i break? lol the case itself the shift motor. or are there syncros in there? any help or ideas would be very appreciated :) thanks :)

Its hard to tell exactly what broke w/o opening the TC .. so it looks like its time to get the toolbox out and make some room on your workbench :D.

To check the shift motor, you could of course unbolt the shift motor from the transfer case but keep it (electrically) connected to the rest of the vehicle and have someone else turn the dash-switch to all of its positions -- you should then be able to see the shift motor rotate. But this is probably not a shift motor problem.

well i guess im going to pic n pull this weekend. think it will be ok to drive to work?

Well crap

Stinks about the case but when you get another one you can tear this one down. There really interesting

Yeah just put it back in 2HI and you'll be okay.

As an alternative though (since you're replacing the transfer case anyway), look into the manually-shifted Borg Warner 1354 transfer case -- a lot less troublesome than its electrically shifted 1354 counterpart. It bolts right up to the transmission and driveshafts you have now (its the same length) and all you have to do is mount the shifter. I found my two manual 1354 (one backup) from http://car-part.com

IZ YOU ROCK>>>>>>>>>>

I just bought a manual 1354 off the site with everything. for 200

Yeah definitely give the place a call first 'cauz some shops dont keep an accurate inventory or they lag behind. But thats also where I found my Toyota IFS steering box (with pitman arm) for $25 :D

Thats a sweet site. Thanks

haha no worries. the cheapest manual in my aria was around $170

Get it. Im a easy wheeler and i have already busted one auto transfer. Ill be ready to see my manual get in this week

i need to know about transfer case... all the data like what is the failure?,the specification and everything to analysis....

well it is still driving, but now it makes the clunking sound when i start it.
could it be the torque converter? or would it just not drive if that was it?
the t case no longer makes any noise when i engage it. any ideas?

thanks, tim

What do you mean when you start it? You mean when you start the engine and the vehicle is still in Park?

yes. it is with it in park, i will turn the key and when it cranks it will make the clunk sound. but it doesn't do it every time. i have no idea what it could be now. but it is getting worse :(

I just picked up a manual shifted 13-54 out of a smashed up ranger down at pick n pull in Rancho Cordova. I payed like 120 for it I think. And just so happens that my shift moter went out tonight so I guess it's time to throw it in.

i would go get one but i don't think its the t case any more. it is working fine now. if it made the noise loud enough i would try record it. but you can feel it more than you can hear it.

Does it clunk when it goes into gear. Like shift from park to drive?

it makes the sound when it is cranking to start. and under acceleration. and i can feel it in the floor boards. it almost feels like if you where pedaling your bike and the chain skipped. and thats what has me thinking the torque converter. but i can very easily be wrong. lol
