transfer case problem

ok ive got a 91 4x4 and when i push the 4x4 button, nothing happens. the light doesnt even come on for it, and its never locked in place. so would it be the transfer case thats causing this problem???

More likely the shift motor. 1st gens had the Borg Warner 1354 transfer case and the motor was notorious for giving problems after about 50K miles... here is a couple of links... should help

I removed my shift motor from my 94 ranger after I experienced the same problem....a simple cleaniing and it works fine ....a bit slow at times maybe but it works now ....thanks for the tips from this board
