I am having a problem with my 1995 Ford Explorer.
I have not browsed any forums yet.

I am sure I have the Borg Warner 13-54 transfer case.

My transmission will not work in 2 wheel drive. It makes loud whining and clicking noises when I try to move.

I am able to move and drive with auto shifting properly when in 4h or 4l. It still makes the loud whining noise when accelerator is released.

Thanks for help.

You probably have the 4405 transfer case.

But from your description, it sounds like your transfer case's main shaft is broken and your vehicle's front wheels are the only ones propelling your vehicle. Either that or there is something wrong with the rear axle/differential. I would advise that you do not drive your vehicle any more to minimize the damage.

How comfortable are you mechanically when it comes to working with vehicles?

Ditto. If you have a '95, you have a 44-05 transfer case. Ditto on the diagnosis too.

95 has the 13-54 not the 4405 that is used on the 5.0 awd

The 13-54 does not have the capability to engage automatically. If you have a switch on your dash that says '2wd 4auto 4low' you have the 44-05.

And the 44-05 was not used on the 5.0.

I dont know where you get your info but i know that i have a 13-54 and i have a 95, also my friend had a 97 mounty with the 5.0 and it had a 44-05.

The 5.0 could not have come from the factory with a 4405. The 5.0 only came with the "AWD" transfer case -- in other words, non-selectable.

I get my info from this board, as well as the factory service manuals.

The 44-05 is the only transfer case Ford ever put in an Explorer that's capable of automatic 4 wheel drive. The 13-54 uses a lockup collar to mechanically lock the front front shaft to the rear output. The 44-05 uses an electronically controlled transfer case clutch coil controlled by the torque on demand relay to automatically lock the transfer case when it detects rear wheel slippage. Their internals are completely different. There's no mistaking them either in design or function.

If you have automatic 4 wheel drive, you have a 44-05. The 13-54 is simply not capable of functioning the same way. So, as I stated before, if you have automatic 4 wheel drive, you have a 44-05.

(disclaimer: Unless at some point Ford and Borg-Warner installed the guts later used in the 44-05 in a sort of hybrid 13-54 case in a few very early 95s, but until I see a model sticker on it that states otherwise, I stand by my info)

As for the Mounty, a 97 Mounty with a 5.0 AWD should have been equipped with a 44-06 and be full-time, non-selectable, all wheel drive. To my knowledge, Ford never put anything but a 44-06 behind any V-8 Explorer prior to '02. If they had, then it would be a selectable two-speed transfer case with a switch on the dash. To my knowledge, the 44-06 will not physically bolt up to the 5R44E/5R55E used behind the V-6s, and the 44-05 used behind the V-6s in the second gens will not bolt up to the auto used behind either the 5.0 or the 4.6. (Model number escapes me... it's a Friday) Again, if there is an exception, I will happily stand corrected. However, I have yet to see anything different.

with the 5.0 in friends mounty it must have been a 44-06 then, but you can see why i would say its a 44-05 as its only one digit off

Absolutely... but it doesn't explain the 13-54 / 44-05 issue. Your switch says 2wd/4auto/4low, correct?

yeah and all of the service info including alldata say that its a 13-54

I'll trust the OEM Ford manuals loooong before I'll trust Alldata for anything. I've often wondered where they get their info from. They're wrong a lot of the time.

Update: Just pulled the data from the 95 manual:

Shift Control System, Control Trac (C-Trac)

NOTE: Before performing any 4x4 repair, check for any diagnostic repair codes.
Transfer Case Features
  • Four mode positions 2WD, 4WD Auto, 4WD Low Range, and Neutral.
    • The first three modes are selected using a rotary switch (2WD, 4WD Auto, 4WD Low).
    • Neutral is available as a dealer installed option and is activated when four specific conditions are met:
  1. Ignition switch in off position (steering not locked).
  1. Automatic transmission (7003) in neutral position.
  1. Vehicle speed is 0 km/h (0 mph).
  1. Depress brake for 5 seconds; a tone will indicate neutral was achieved.
C-Trac Function

The new C-Trac transfer case (7A195) transmits torque to front wheels through an electromechanical ball ramp clutch after a predetermined delta speed between front and rear driveshafts (4602) is exceeded. These driveshaft speeds are monitored using Hall effect sensors that send signals to the new on-board Generic Electronic Module (GEM). Upon observing an exceeded delta speed, the GEM then activates the transfer case clutch coil with a varying current to minimize the delta speed. Low Range Function

In low range, the transfer case's electromechanical clutch locks the front and rear driveshafts for maximum 4x4 traction. The transfer case motor also rotates a cam that moves a range fork to the four low position. This range shift is accomplished through a planetary gearset which changes the torque to the driveshafts from a 1:1 to a 2.48:1 ratio. 2WD Mode
In the two-wheel drive mode, the transfer case's shift fork is moved to the high position and the electromechanical clutch is turned off. One hundred percent of the torque is therefore sent to the rear wheels.

Transfer Case

The Borg-Warner 44-05 transfer case (7A195) is used in Explorer (4x4) vehicles. The transfer case transfers power from the transmission to the rear axle, and also to the front axle when electronically actuated. Mechanical Operation

In the 4x2 mode, torque from the transmission (7003) is transferred to the input shaft (7017) , which in turn drives the rear output shaft that drives the rear axle assembly (4006) .
The 2WD through 4WD auto shift is accomplished through an electromechanical ball ramp clutch. The electromechanical ball ramp clutch drives the drive sprocket after the GEM module activates the clutch coil. The drive sprocket turns the chain which turns the front output shaft and the front driveshaft (4602) . The high-low shift is accomplished when the high-low shift fork moves the reduction collar to engage the front planet (7A398) to the output shaft. Torque from the input shaft is then transmitted through the sun gear, which then turns the front planet . The front planet , which is now engaged to the output shaft, provides a reduction.

The 13-54 was not used in the 95 Explorer or Aerostar, only the '95 Ranger.

Thanks for all the relies.

The problem is fixed.

I have the 44-05 transfer case. I R&R the case and problem solved.

The pump went bad creating other problems.

Thanks all,
John.
