I have a 2002 ford explorer xlt 4wd, I posted something a while back talking about a loud clink noise coming from my car when I would put it in reverse and also sometimes in drive. I put the rear end on some jack stands and first I inspected the u joints, they seemed fine. But I did notice alot of play in the drive shaft. I also noticed up around where the drive shaft from the rear hooks up to transfer case seems to have the most play, but its like inside the transfer case. I can move it back and forth and can hear the chain inside. that noise I hear when I put it in reverse. So I decided to start it up and goes thru the gears while it was still up. when in drive it shifted hard thru the gears it sounds like its still coming from the transfer case. so I have been looking for transfer case rebuilds for the borg warner 1354. is that the right one?? so I can see about rebuilding. I have read that it could be just the bearings inside. and also that if it keeps on it can mess something up. I really wanna fix this asap but maybe someone can steer me in the right direction??

Geez so even after the new transfer case it still did it? I dont know about mine, when im under it moving it back and forth it sounds like its coming from the transfer case. I dont see how it could be the transmisson. Im just aggravated with this thing I have only had it for about two months and all this stuff starts. it has 137000 miles on it. I read all kinds of reviews about the transmissons in this year gong out as well as the rear end.

I had the same issue with mine sounding like the transfer case being the issue. What I found, and fixed was the rear cv joint. It was bad, and after reaplcement, the other issues stopped. Now I'm not an expert, but I had it explained to me the extra stress of the cv joint creates stress on the driveshaft, and results in a chain effect to some degree.

Well I took it to the local transmisson shop, and they told me that the front drive shaft was not turning like it should be. I guess it has all wheel drive. I didnt know my model came with it. they said when they had it in drive the front drive shaft acted like it wanted to turn. My four wheel drive does not work, the guy I bought it from said it needed the 4wd control module which I hear is common. The lights for the 4wd drive dont even come on when you try to put it in 4wd. the transmisson shop wanted 125 to search further for the problem. I was thinking maybe that noise coming from the transfer case could be it trying to turn the front drive shaft but since the module is not engaging it, it makes that noise. just a thought.

you can get the module and replace it...its located behind the glove box...
