I have a 96 Ex. Sport 4x4, Auto, V6 and my output shaft of transfer case has excessive play, other than that everything seem fine. Question: I live in the Phoenix AZ area and woundered if anyone knew of a place where I can get it rebuilt.
I was told that the Tcase would have to be rebuilt in order to correct this problem?
I have seen other threads where this could cost $1500 or more??

Any suggestions rather than lighting a fire??

Is the play like in-and-out or more vertical/side-to-side?

$1500 is way too much for a transfer case, at that point, you might as well get a used one and slap it in (it really takes just a few hours to swap transfer cases). Just make sure its the right one - I think yours comes with a vacuum something for the front axle disconnect. Also, I think yours has a speed sensor at the rear output.

The play is verticle/side-to-side. Your correct about my Tcase. I think its a 4404, 4 bolt flange on the output shaft.
