95 explorer
I have a 95 Explorer that - apart from window motors - has really never given me any grief.
Recently, the "spinning, whirring sound" from the transfer case manifested itself, and the next day, I had an Explorer that would only move in 4low.
That doesn't get me to work.

Long story short - I found a "control trac 4405" a couple hours away for a good price, and got a buddy to give me a ride to fetch it.

I got the thing home and realized it was a little different than mine. The front yoke on mine is a old style u-joint yoke, this new one has sort of a cup shape..
A quick check on the net tells me there are different versions across the years - fine.
I have to get this fixed so I can go to work, so I opt to just leave off the front drive shaft.
The swap goes as well as can be expected for someone who's never done one (done more than a few on my beloved Broncos), but the one snag I hit is a 2 wire connector that fits into what looks like a speedo cable plug on my old 4405.
This new case doesn't seem to have matching plug or hole where one would go (by the rear output shaft)
(full disclosure - I discovered this AFTER I had the new one in place - it was getting dark...)
Am I just missing the thing or is there another location? Do later X-fer cases have a different method of speed sensing?
My explorer seems to move fine, but not shift properly - nor does the speedo work.

You have the wrong case its off a newer truck that uses a tone ring in the rear, you need a 95/96 case to work with your style front driveshaft or a 97 case with its matching cv style shaft, I think its 98 when they changed the speedo and unless you wanna rewire your whole truck thats your options, where are you located? Myself or other members have what you need just a matter of who's close,

The other option if you still have your old one is to open them up and steel parts out of the newer one to fix your original

I'll probably crack them both open when I get the chance and swap the guts, or find a 95 like mine and just trade the newer one for that.
The front drive isn't really a big deal for me, just the lack of up shifting.
I find that if I ease up on acceleration around 2000, it shifts fine, but I'd rather have it work right.
I was hoping there was something I could do that didn't involve dropping the case again. For now, I'll have to just get around as-is.

The other thing that held me up was the transfer case motor position. When I dropped my case, it was in 4Low (and so was the dash switch). The new one showed "high" by the position of the range nub where the motor mounts
-BUT-
the new motor was in a different position - I had to mount it clocked 1 position counterclockwise so it would engage with the "range nub".

Is there a way to reposition the motor so I can mount it properly?

Sorry - BTW I'm in Tampa.

Plug it in with the switch in 2wd and see if it resets the motor

Right on - the motor seems to have reset. In any case, I can definitely feel the difference between low & hi.
If I drive about 1/8 mile in 2nd at 2000 rpm, the overdrive light flashes, and I can shift into D, and drive pretty much normally, (but with no OD).
Works for now, but I'll keep an eye out for a 95 tcase.
