Does the transfer case have a noticeable clunk when the 4x4 auto engages.

I was out in the snow and took off while in auto mode and the truck had a noticeable clunk as it would seem the front wheels got power. 4x4 was working fine as the truck took right off no problem.

I've also heard some "clunking" sounds when the auto 4x4 kicks in, but it sounds to me like it is coming from the front hub area of the front wheels engaging. My mechanic said it is perfectly normal for that to happen. In local driving on snow covered roads, I usually just switch it to 4x4 high mode to keep that from happening, auto 4x4 constantly kicking in and out as traction is lost and wheel slippage occurs.

yah, it gets pretty annoying every time I stop and take off on snow covered roads and it has to kick in. I guess I will just put it in 4 high like you said.

I guess I am used to the smoothness of our escape, that 4wd or "AWD" is smooth as hell even when you floor it on snow and ice.

Its nothing to worry about. It scared the hell out of me at first also. I thought the front end was coming apart. Once you get used to it you will hardly even notice it. Most times when I know I will be in a situation that traction is low I just hit 4 high and keep going.
