the switch on my dash works great when engaging the 4wd in my 96 ex. i was just wondering if there is a manual transfer case swap i can do for more reliability?

Find yourself a BW 13-54 manual with all the linkage. That's your way to go. Bolts right up, you will just need to match the driveshaft yokes.
