I am wondering which transfer cases will mate up with the 4r70W/5.0 Litre combination. i am "upgrading" my 91 4.0/a4ld, and would like to know if i can reuse my 1354 or if a new t case is required.
The only way to use the 1354 is with an adapter kit from Advance Adapters. This will require the complete tear down of your 4R70W to install the output shaft. I wish they would make an input shaft for the transfer case instead.
well scratch the 1354 then, the reason im doing the swap is because i dont want to buy the expensive adapter for my c4. our dollar is low and duties on that would make the adapter atrocious no matter what,, any other suggestions on what t case will bolt up to the 4r70w? keep in mind its a 91 explorer. i have read a few options on here
a) using a 4406 with manual shift
b) using the 4406 with electric shift but i wonder if my existing 4wd controls will operate this unit
c) using a 1356 from late 80s early 90s ford truck/bronco (which i have)
Swapping to a 4406 or using the Advance Adapter route will probably both be about the same price. In fact, the Advance Adapt could be cheaper depending on how much you have to pay for parts and how low a mileage they have on them. To swap to the 4406, you will need a transfer case, shifter, both drivelines, at least one conversion joint...probably all four joints by the time you're done. You could probably pay for the adapter kit for that price. It would depend on how much it would cost to get the shaft installed if you can't do it yourself.
I have a 351 pushing a 4r70w and 1356 BW xfer case
1) I used a front driveshaft from a '97 up F150 w/4.6 engine
2) rear shaft was shortened 1.5"
3) tranny mount was moved to passenger side about 1" to clear drivers frame rail
4) tranny mount was also move forward about 2"
5) I already had 2" body lift for engine which is almost mandatory for xfer case unless well beaten=hammer
My case is from a '90 Bronco with rear flange (no slip yoke)and is manual shift. I had to drill and tap the xfercase flange to the smaller Explorer driveshaft flange diameter bolt holes-easy.
I love this setup as I now have a strong driveline built from the factory for fullsize truck use.
