My transfercase just went out on my 91xlt with a 5 speed. I found a used one from a 92 with a automatic. Will that transfer case work with with my 5 speed? How hard would it be to install?

it will as long as the t-cases are of the same kind (manual or pushbutton)

D,

Did you originally have a manual t-case? If so, I would be interested in buying all the linkage from you (if still available). I have a auto t-case but I want to swap.

CHH777,

Did you find a Manual T-case for your Swap?

No it's an auto but you can probably find ten manulas if you go to this site. www.junkyarddog.com/

Kris,

I found a manual t-case locally for $200. It's already pulled but has no linkage parts.

Ford is NO help. Unless the parts guy can work the logic through his feeble little mind first he won't offer any parts related assistance. Here's how the conversation went:

Me: "I need the linkage parts for a manual Borg Warner 13-54 in a 94 Explorer"
Part guy: "What are you trying to do?"
Me: "I'm trying to swap a manual t-case in for a push-button"
Part: "Why would you want to do that?"
Me: "Because the auto only works intermittantly" (PC way of saying it's a POS)
Part: "Let me sell you a new shift motor for $400"
Me: "Nope, not interested. How 'bout that linkage?"
Part: "There has to be a better way of solving this problem"
Me: "Hey! How 'bout that linkage?"
Part: "How about a brand new manual t-case for $1150"
Me: "Uh, no. BUT, would that come with the linkage I need?"
Part: "No"
Me: "Is there any way I can just buy the linkage I need if I already have the t-case?"
Part: "Where is your truck? Let's go have a look"
Me: "Whatever! It's in the lot outside"
Part guy: "Hey, that's a Mazda! We don't sell Mazda parts!" (He cops a serious attitude at this point).
Me: "AAAARRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!"

Sorry for the long rant. Looks like I'm off to find a donor vehicle (with linkage)...

Hey Conyl,

You want me to get the Part #s for you?

That would be great.

Ok,

I got the Part #'s for you. BTW this is all for an Auto tranny.

OE9TZ-7479-B This is the hump plate cut for the lever

OE9TZ-7277-A This is the boot

OF0TZ-7210-A This is the lever and the knob

If your Parts Dept. at your Dealer will not help My Dealer will. My Dealer gave me a quote of $152.68 for all of it.

I hope this helps let me know what happens.

Kris,

You "Da Man"!

With part numbers in hand I don't anticipate any trouble from the parts guy.

I'll keep ya posted. Thanks again...

ive had to tell them to pull the microfilm up for the related item and point to the stuff i want. this is the only way to get stuff off of other models and years that you want. i think the parts guys are jealous of the mechanics and want to "fix" the "problem" lol. i never go to the dealer unless i need somthing that no one else has like that shift linkage. good luck with your mod.

I think my Dealer likes me... They always get the parts I want or need. They gave me print outs of how the parts go together and order any part I want. It was a big help when I did my 4x4 conversion.

there should be some kind of reward for service like that so that it spreads. ive never encountered a service department like that.

I've touched on this subject before. I have an automatic with a pushbutton transfer, and I would just love to switch the transfer to stick. Has anyone completed this swap yet?

Armed with the part numbers supplied by Kris, what else would be required, other than the obvious transfer case? What should I expect to come with the transfer case? Will there be any other things to look out for, like wiring, sensors, etc.?

Better yet, has anyone done (or planning to do) a step-by-step on this?

The saga continues...

Well, the guy with the $200 t-case backed out of the deal. Now he says he'll get fired if he sells it for any less than $350. Sounds like BS to me and I'm strapped after the new tranny.

Anyway, I'm still doing this swap just as soon as I get some funds together. I'll borrow a digital camera and do a write-up too.

BTW, anyone want to make a donation? :D

Kris, I seem to remember you telling me that there was an output shaft problem with the conversion that needed to be addressed. Could you run that by me again? Something about not having enough splines or something. Would I have this problem switching from the electric to manula t-case in an already 4x4 with an automatic?

Randall,

This would not be a Problem for you... The Problem I had was for Converting a 2wd tranny to a 4x4 tranny. The Manual BW 13-54 will bolt in place of Your Elce. BW 13-54.

T-case auto to Manual swap out.

I just now read this after we changed ours over to a man T-case this week end at my cousins. Man. T-case $250, linkage $50. Total time 6 Hrs. Would have been a lot less time but Ford used thread locker on all the driveline nuts. I still have to get a new bushing for the T-case shifter and one large bolt that holds the linkage agaist the 5-speed. Since we use our X a lot off road this swap is well worth every dime, and yes we were having problems with the pushbutton shift at which time i disassembled it and after re-installing determined it would be money DOWN the drain to get any of these electrical parts replaced when the manual set up doesn't need this to operate anyway! KISS! keep it simple stupid. Plus our X came from the factory with the Ford oem (warn) hubs already. I hope this helps any one here good luck.
