I'm wondering how I would go about servicing my transmission and diffs...

I can almost guarantee they've never been done and I'm knocking on the door of 90k miles..

would I need to service the transfer case too?

what would I need materials wise?

Hi,

When you say 'servicing' are you thinking of fluids and filters or something more involved?

Hi Si,
all I know is that if you change the rear diff oil, you have to add a special friction modifier. Ford do sell it, but you have to tell them about it.

Si- yes thats right about the rear diff oil and friction modifier stuff- I did that on my previous xlt- just remove the cover and let it drain, replace after you wipe it clean and mooch around with a tourch- then top up from the fill hole just behind the bell end......NOT that end! lol!!

I think the gearbox oil is another harder job- as to change it proper like- you have to flush it with fresh but also do the filter! I also think its fairly expensive to do as you can only use Ford stuff- or has someone come up with an alternative by now?

when my gearbox needed a torque converter replaced it only cost me 12 quid for the filter from usa and 106 quid from auto oils which supply for usa cars in this country.

Yeah, I just mean replacing fluids/filters etc... nothing too in depth...

I've never done anything like this before and as no garages around here have any clue as to what I'm talking about I'd rather do it myself than get ripped off, been there already!

Thanks for all your help

Hey BIGHVM
Does the plate have a gasket or do you seal with blue stuff or just make sure the mating faces are clean?
Reason i ask is my dora is up on a ramp and popped in to see mechanic and noticed the diff is leaking a little. Is it likely a quick tighten would do it or might you suggest a drain, clean up and reseal?
Thanks
Jan

Ford sell a special sealant, in a syringe, for the diff cover.
Comma do a special grade oil for the 5R55E.

Thanks Kevin P.
Sorry to press but does this comma stuff still need the friction modifier from ford? If so how much are those robbing expletives gonna tax me for the sealant and modifier?
I'm lookin forward to getting the cover off as i've never seen in a dif before. Is that a little sad??

Hi janolsson,

I think the sealant was about £8. [for the diff cover]

The Comma oil is the automatic transmission fluid that Si was asking about. It comes in a 1 litre bottle at about £7. Comma AQ202.

I think my Explorer says to use Mercon V.... I'm not using it much lately anyway, so I'm probably gonna wait to service it till after I come back from Canada in Feb... it's getting put away for 5 months...

Si

Hi Si,
The comma AQ202 is the mercon V equivelent.

How much will I need for the tranny? and what should I use for the diffs and transfer case? also, where's the best place to get the seals and filters from? I've never done anything like this before and I ain't got a clue... thanks guys...

Si

Thanks Gman... I've just found out it's a 3.73 rear diff lol... been under it with some kitchen cleaner to clean the diff tag.. I'm still unsure whether to do it before I go away for 5 months or when I come back...
