2004 explorer xlt
Have an 04 xlt explorerer with transmission shift problems.it is 5r55s .does the 5r55w work as a replacement ? And do the years
02_05 interchange?

In a word, no, unless some changes are made involving the PCM (computer). Reason is, though the 5R55W and S appear identical, they have different gear ratios in I believe it's 2nd. gear, doesn't really matter though, if I remember which gear incorrectly.

What happens if one is substituted for the other is the ratio of shaft speeds expected is wrong, a code is thrown indicating "incorrect gear ratios". That code means slippage is occurring in the driving members (which really isn't). This means contending with a check engine light constantly. IF one is substituted for the other, the PCM must be changed. Be aware that changes were made to ABS also in the Gen 3s, and arbitrarily changing a PCM can result in ABS problems.

I'm searching for a donor car.so thank you for the information.ill just make sure I get a donor with the v code .
 






Also, has to be the same cylinder configuration. V6 and V8’s have different bellhousings on the trans.
