So my Explorer has had some transmission problems, or it seems that that the transmission is the problem. A delay in acceleration(which I think is a lag from the computer to the engine, because it is not like the transmission is slipping), and jerking(climbing in RPMs, and then slamming into gear) into 2nd or 3rd gear, and a clunking feeling randomly on downshifts. I am sort of worried here because one minute it works great, and then the next it has all the symptoms at once. Onto of that I am am a college student, and my funds for vehicle repair are low, to none. I am not entirely certain what transmission I really have, but I believe I have the one that is in my Specs sheet on the site here.

Enough rambling, I am contemplating, doing a change of the fluid, many people on here said that they did that with the transmission I have, or think I have, and that the problems have gone away. On the other hand all the older mechanics my dads know, have said to me not to change it because it will not move again. I have almost 162,x.. miles on it now, on what I assume is the stock fluid, not sure because I have only owned the truck for a year and a half. I also took a look at the fluid, and it was dark, nearly black, with a hint of red, it smelled bad, but not burnt, so hopefully that is a good sign.

So I am sort of at a standstill here, not sure on what to do, or even what brand of filter to go with, I am thinking WIX filter, when/if I get one. I would really would like some input here. I am also thinking of changing the transfer case fluid, before winter hits here, is it true that it takes ATF fluid?

Nobody has any input here? Well regardless drove it today, and it worked great, no problems at all. But we will see how it goes on the ride home from school.

I may want to this in here, I know I forgot.

4R70W I think is the transmission.

4R70W is the trans that is mated up with the 5.0 AWD. If you change the fluid have it flushed and get all that gunk out of there. The transfer case does use ATF. If you are going to be changing the transmission and transfer case fluid go ahead and change the fluid in the axles too. Don't forget the add a friction modifier to the rear diff if you do change the axle fluids. For fluids like axle/gear oil and transmission fluids I dont go cheap here as they dont get changed on a regular basis like your engine oil so dont go for the cheapest here, rather go for a good name brand. I use Royal Purple in EVERYTHING but it will be very expensive to do all at once.

Good luck and hope everything works out.

The overdrive light has never come on. Nor is there any history of any transmission codes. The O/D works well. I turned it on and off and listened and it is for working. As for the fluids, and tranny info. Thank you so much. Glad I know I have the transmission I thought I had. I have already bought ATF from AZ because what I was doing was drop the pan, replace the filter. And then in the spring do it again, but use good fluid, I prefer lucas. As for the difs, I have done the rear diff already, and used the Friction modifier, and Lucas 80W 90.

Good to hear you are using a good name for the oils. I hate seeing people put some cheap branded oils in there trucks/cars just to save a buck, when they don't realize that it may end up costing them more down the road.

Exactly, When it comes to my vehicle, I either go factory replacement, or well known brands of parts, and fluids. My buddies call me crazy spending $5+ a week on Lucas fuel system cleaner, but hey, when I am helping them replace their injectors, I won't be so crazy. :)

Also another update on my Explorer. I will most likely be doing just the transfer case and front dif now, mainly because I have no time, and it won't take nearly as long as the Transmission. Unless my autos teacher would be really cool to let me use the transmission flush machine outside of class, I doubt I would even be able to do anything with the transmission otherwise. My work space as of right now is my driveway. So most likely on Sunday, weather permitting I will do the T-Case, and possible the front dif. leaving only one thing to do, which is the transmission.

In the spring when I get my Tax return check I will buy all new fluids for me Explorer. New Rear Differential fluid, new ATF, New front Differential Fluid, and re-flush the Rad. That way I have an exact time when I did them all instead of just doing all randomly and at separate times. I have my Oil changes, and tire rotations in a log book, and that is how I really want all my fluid changes to be. I just hope waiting to change the trans fluid will not hurt it too much.
