i just talked to my Ford transmission tech about putting a cooler on my 2002 explorer (non sport) and he told me that it already had one even if i did not have the tow package. he said he has not seen an explorer that did not have one. they put the cooler on at the factory and when a tow package is installed they just change out the rear diff. has anyone else heard of this? he also said if i tow to change out the fluid more often. ford states that this is a sealed unit and needs no regular fluid changes but, it is the same tran fluid they use in all their vehicles and it breaks down.

that is correct for Gen3's I don't believe gen2's and gen1's are the same. Also if it was me I would still add another cooler, especially living in Kentucky, you have both heat and hills, and can quickly fry a transmission while climbing long slope on a hot day. Additionally if you tow anything at all or even carry a lot of people or weight in your truck it will really help your transmission.

Bottom line, the cooler the better, and if you really want to keep your truck for the long haul you may want to add a temp gauge and swap out the oem mercon V for a full synthetic mercon V. Also check with Ford to see if there are any PCM shifting updates.
