I have a 98 Explorer with a factory transmission cooler but I don't think it's working. Where is the thermostat that lets the fluid through the cooler? I see that alot of the aftermarket coolers have it built in and the fluid bypasses the cooler until it reaches a certain temperature. Is the oem ford one the same way?

150 degrees

According to the documentation I've found on the 5R55E the internal valve that controls the external cooling loop opens when the ATF in the torque converter reaches 150 degrees F. However, when experimenting with my external coolers I disconnected both hoses from the external cooler and placed them in clear containers. When I started the engine there was outflow from both hoses even though the ATF temperature was only about 70 degrees F. One hose output was twice that of the other.
