I just did a pan drop and transmission flush for the 5R55E of my 2000 XLT. It was my first time so it took a while. But I'm glad that I finished it, and the transmission works well after the flush (though it wasn't bad before).

There were something really annoying in this process. The catalytic converter heat shield is a pain. The Haynes says it is impossible to take the heat shield clips off, and unfortunately it was proved to be the case. It was not that hard to take the pan off, but it really took time to put the pan back. The clips are very tight.

I followed the tranny flush guidelines on the maintenance page: hook up a hose to the cooler line that is close to the radiator cap, and add one quart through the dipstick tube after flushing one quart out. Since I did it only by myself, I put the fluid container near the driver's door, so that I can turn off the engine in time. However, I didn't notice a small amount of fluid was also coming out from the cooler line fitting on the radiator when the engine was running, until 7 or 8 quarts were already flushed out. I don't know why because the fluid is supposed to go into the radiator through that way. Although only half a quart of the fluid came out from the radiator, it was enough to make engine compartment a mess. Maybe next time, I should also connect a hose to the fitting, or simply plug it.;)
