Hi,

I have a 95 explorer 4.0 v6 4wd. My transmission is having problems.

If i find a same model year 2wd v6 with a good transmission could i swap it into my 4wd vehicle and still have 4wd?

thanks
michael

Yes, you can. Whether it's worth the effort or not, I don't know.

When converting a 2wd transmission to a 4wd transmission, you usually need to change the tailshaft and the tailshaft housing, so it will mate up to the transfer case properly. When you rebuild a transmission, the tailshaft is usually the last thing to come out and the first thing to go back in. At that point, you are only the cost of parts away from rebuilding the transmission.

If your goal is to avoid the cost/hassle of a rebuild, I vote not worth the effort. If your goal is to have a spare, rebuilt transmission on hand ready to install as soon as the current one dies, then maybe.
