No Forward Gears!!! Help Please!!

:fire: I AM DRIVING A 91 XLT AUTOMATIC 4WD THAT I AM BORROWING UNTIL I PURCHASE MY NEW VEHICLE NEXT MONTH. I HAVE PUT MORE MONEY INTO IT THAN I CARE TO ADMIT BUT YET ANOTHER PROBLEM! I WAS OUT SHOPPING YESTERDAY, BACKED OUT OF A PARKING SPOT AND COULD NOT GO FORWARD! I HAVE NO FORWARD GEARS AT ALL, ONLY REVERSE! HAD TO TOW IT HOME AND HERE IT SITS! THEY SAID THAT THE TRANNY WAS REBUILT LESS THAN 20,000 MILES AGO. LOOKING FOR THE CHEAPEST AND EASIEST FIX SO THAT I DONT END UP PAYING MORE TO FIX THIS VEHICLE THAN ITS WORTH! THANKS FOR ANYONES HELP!

check the trany fluid level??

:bounce: FUNNY YOU SHOULD SAY THAT! JUST CHECKED IT 2 DAYS AGO DOING OTHER REPAIRS BUT TODAY IT IS VERY LOW! LOOKING FOR THE LEAK NOW! THANKS! :chug:

:fire: PLEASE DISREGARD MY LAST POST, IT HAS A SMALL LEAK BUT THE FLUID IS OVER FULL. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

 I HAVE A 91 XLT 4WD AUTOMATIC THAT WILL NOT GO FORWARD IN ANY GEAR! REVERSE IS GREAT BUT DOESNT HELP MUCH! DROPPED THE TRANNY PAN AND HAVE GLITTERY FLUID BUT NOTHING MAJOR. LOOKS LIKE ONE OF 2 SOLENOIDS IS TOASTED. I DONT KNOW WHICH IT IS AND IF THAT COULD CAUSE THE PROBLEM BUT I NEED SOME QUICK HELP! THANKS!

if it doenst go forward in any gear sounds liek the tranny is in need of a rebuild or replacement

Just out of curiosity, have you tried to put it into "2" and then tried to move? I toated 1st gear in mine once and didn't think i had anyforward gears until i tried second.

I Have Tried Every Gear And Nothing. However, It Did Creep Forward A Few Feet When I Was Putting On The Stands. I Think I Will Flush The Tranny, Put It Back Together And If It Still Doesnt Go I Will Just Pull It And Have It Rebuilt. Thanks For Everyones Help!

I'm guessing your forward clutch pack is burned.

[See my later post. On this subject the sudden onst mitigates against this diagnosis]

(really curious about the fluid levels.)

I'm going to second Glacier's guess because the only gear where the forward clutch pack is not engaged is reverse (makes sense to me). You can rule out the pump if you still have reverse. Another possible (but pretty unlikely) culprit could be the valve body being full of debris. Since you have it on stands and the pan is off, it is only a few bolts to pull the valve body off and see what crud is on top of the valve body seperator plate... I only mention this because you stated that you have glittery fluid.

;) I FOUND A Burnt Solenoid! I BELIEVE IT IS THE TCC SOLENOID BUT NOT 100% POSITIVE. I Have A Few Questions For The Experts.
1) Could This Be The Problem With No Forward Gears Only Reverse?
2) Which Solenoid Is The Closest To The Rear Of The Truck (just To Make Sure)
3) How The Heck Do I Get It Out? I Have Worked On It But Dont Want To Damage Anything, Is There An Easy Way Or Something I Missed?

Any Help Is Greatly Appreciated! Thanks!!!

~OH AND WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO GET THESE? I LIVE IN PHOENIX.

Lauri, go look at the thread "My A4LD Diary" and you'll find detailed pictures.

THANKS GLACIER! I LOOKED AT YOUR DIARY, GREAT JOB BY THE WAY! WHAT IS YOUR OPINION? COULD THIS BE MY PROBLEM? OBVIOUSLY I WILL REPLACE IT BUT NOT BEING KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT TRANSMISSIONS I WOULD HATE TO PULL IT ALL APART IF I DONT NEED TO. THANKS!

I'd like for you to make sure it IS burnt out...The resistance (for either soleniod measured individually) should read somewhere between 20-40 Ohms between the leads (mine read at ~29). It is kind of tough to get a good reading because of the fluid, so if you are reading infinite resistance, make sure your prongs are making good contact.

The TCC soleniod (makes sure torque converter clutch is unlocked for any 4-3 downshifts) is towards the front of the tranny, and the 3-4 shift soleniod (inhibits a 3-4 shift under certain conditions) is towards the rear.

Sorry to break the bad news, but I can't see either solenoid as being a cause of your symptoms. If you recheck and still believe you need a new one, I got a 3-4 at Checker (only had one in stock at main warehouse - Niehoff brand) for about $30, but here's a place that sells either one for $21 or both for $35:

You also might want to read this Tech Bulletin about the soleniods (they redesigned the screen):

Let us know how it's going

Oh, to pull out the soleniods, check out Glacier's thread on his A4LD rebuild (has pictures of the soleniods starting on this page):
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98027&page=3

Here's an exploded view showing the retainer plates (again, thanks Glacier):

BRAIN, YOU'RE AN ANGEL! :bounce: I LOOKED AT THE DIARY AND NOW KNOW HOW TO GET THE SOLENOIDS OUT. I ASSUMED THAT THE SOLENOID NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AS THE WIRE IS ALL BURNT AND THE EXPOSED END LOOKS LIKE A BURNT MARSHMALLOW.

OKAY, REALISTICALLY, IF I HAVE NOT WORKED ON TRANNYS BEFORE SHOULD I ATTEMPT TO LOCATE AND REPLACE THE FORWARD CLUTCH?
IF SO, WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO GET PICS AND INFO ON THIS SHORT OF SEARCHING FORUMS FOR HOURS?

I AM GOING TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE DIARY AGAIN AND SEE IF THERE IS A PICTURE OF THAT CLUTCH.

THANKS AGAIN!!!! ;)

There is a picture of that clutch and rebuilding it, but.... Let's step back a minute and reason this one through. Your symptoms did not creep up on you, it was just all of a sudden. Right? When you say you checked the fluid, and it was overfull, was the motor running in park ? If not recheck it properly. (a common mistake). Assuming that doesn't tell us anything.....check your shift linkage. Is everything ok there? (ok just a remote chance but need to rule it out)

What do all the foreward gears have in common? 2 things - forward clutch and front one way clutch. The front OW clutch either works or not. if it's broke it's broke. Good news is it's in the front part of the trannie and easy to get to ONCE YOU PULL THE TRANNIE! Might explain the sudden failure. Continuing on....

The forward clutch is in the back half of the case right under the center support. A few things could explain the problem if the forward clutch is not engaging. This clutch is actuated by hydraulic fluid pressure. If your fluid was low, if your valve body was plugged, if your filter was plugged or if the valve body was loose or you blew a valve body gasket, you might lack the required pressure to operate a perfectly good, and operable clutch. Before I pulled the trannie, I might want to pull the valve body and inspect and clean it and reassemble it. Maybe use this opportunity to add the boost valve with o-ring seals too. Add new gaskets and tighten in back in place and see if that solves it.

I previously commented your forward clutch could be burned, but on reflection I'd have expected that to cause slippage before it just gave up the ghost.

Others may have other/better ideas and thoughts.

GLACIER~ NO OTHER REALLY OBVIOUS SYMPTOMS LEADING UP TO THIS. I WILL DO WHAT YOU SAID AND LET YOU KNOW. THANKS SO MUCH! :p
