1995 explorer XLT
i have a 1995 ford explorer xlt 4x4 and i just bought it is my first truck and wanting to get into off roading i am form abbotsford,b.c. i bought this truck from a friend for cheap but when i started to drive it i noticed that it has a really hard time shifting like i put it in drive and start to go and it will rev up to like 3500-4000 and keep going untill you let off of the gas a bit and then it will shift and its a kinda hard shift as well.it does this for 1,2 and i think 3 gear then it doesnt do it anymore i have only driven it once since i bought it cause i have big plans for it and putting in lift and stuff but i dont wanna put money into it if its going to have a shot tranny or something oh ya and by the way it was sitting for like a year and hadnt been driven i dont know if that might have something to do with it but i would assume so.i also have a problem with the 4x4 when i bought it of course i wanted to make sure everything works so i put it in 4x4 and it had a long delay and then clunked in and kinda jumped forward dont know much about trucks yet and need some help thanks in advance.

Welcome!

Hate to be the one to say this to you. The 95 is a royal pita to mod. It can be done, and has been done, but the OBDI.5 makes things a little harder than any of the other 2nd gens.

The 4r55e trans in the 95 is prone to failure from heat and stress over time, and yours sounds as if the valve body is shot. Repairable though.

I seen you have started a few other threads on it today. The suspension lift will be a headache at the t-bar mounts. The brackets are welded on the frame/trans crossmember. Those need to be cut off top make a drop lift work.

The body lift is the same as any other EX. You will run into similar problems as most with this mod.

The delay/clunk in the shifting to 4wd is pretty normal for the most part.

Search the forums for write ups on just about every mod ever done for tech info & pics.

Enjoy the threads!

so would it be better to buy another truck and scrap this one or what?

I was having issues with my 5r55e transmission and I bought a rebuilt/upgraded valve body from http://www.centralvalvebodies.com/
this was about a year ago. At that time there was a discount for members of the forum and the guy was awesome to deal with. I got the valve body, installed it along with flushing the tranny, put in new fluid and it has been great since.
