Year, Model & Trim Level
2002 ford explorer
hi there i'm helping a friend with there car its A 2002 ford explorer 6 speed transmission. The o/d off light was flashing and the service engine soon light was on. It hesitates to shift sometimes and it is slipping in overdrive. i checked the codes and got p1633 and p0775? I also checked the transmission fluid and the level is good, but the fluid is almost black. so my question is, where should we go from here? should we try replacing the fluid and filter? or is this transmission just going to need a overhaul? thanks!

which transmission?

P0775 Pres. Ctrl Solenoid B Circuit Malfunction
P1633, no power to Keep Alive Memory

I thought the 2002 came with the 5R55S or 5R55W which is a 5 speed transmission. The 6R60 6 speed was not incorporated until 2006.

How many miles on the odometer?

Check for power to the keep alive memory (KAM) in the PCM first. No power to the KAM can impact engine performance. It stores things such as fuel trims that are "learned" by the PCM.

Bigc2,

There are many problems with these transmissions and Ford knows they manufactured junk. You are not the only one with this problem, and I am included in these statistics too. Check the solenoid pack first for the proper resistance. Some people just replace the pack, change the filter, fluid, and adjust the bands solving this problem.

For me, I found the OD servo piston cracked. The dealer wanted close to 4 grand to replace the transmission. The entire book value of the truck was not worth that money.

I did some research and came across the same website. (www.fordservoboretransmissionfixsolution.com/ I took the gamble and ordered both servo pistons and installed myself.

This guy is a genius and saved me and many people tons of money. This was the best investment for a $200.00 cheap fix. It is a time consuming repair, but I can confirm that it works great!

I did the repair back in 2012 and the transmission is still working today giving me an additional 40,000 miles. My explorer just turned over 100,000 and I have a little bit of shuttering starting. I suspect that the fluid and filter needs changed.

Hope this helps.

2nd speed?

The torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid bore is probably worn. Replacing the solenoid pack will fix the problem but the overdrive band may be worn from slipping due to low pressure. Does the transmission slip in 2nd speed or skip it when upshifting? 2nd speed is achieved by activating 1st gear and overdrive. What happens in Manual 2nd?

I was messing around with the gears and driving it around, the only time I could notice a problem was it would hesitate really bad to shift from 1st to 2nd, and when it did shift sometimes it would sliparound then, and it would shift really hard and jump. Also the sliping in overdrive. But that's the only time I get a problem? So what would the best bet be? Fluid, filter, and new servos?

Manual 2nd?

What happens if you start out with Manual 2nd selected? Does the engine rev excessively before the vehicle starts to move? How does it compare to starting out with Manual 1st selected?

My concern is that the overdrive band may be worn in addition to the overdrive servo bore being worn. Have you tried adjusting the overdrive band?

I didn't try starting out in 1st or 2nd, but I would pull it down into them while driving, and it seemed to shift the same as letting it do it by its self? It doesnt rev, or slip before it starts to move just in the shift from 1St to 2ND. I'll have to try it next time I have the car. I haven't tried adjusting the band? How would I go about doing that?

Ok, thanks for the info, I'll try it later on this week when I can get the car, and I will post when I find out.
