Transmission locks up in drive.

hi i have a 1997 sport explorer,auto trany , it start up ,goes in reverse
when you put it in drive it lockup and cut off, you can start up put in reverse, then drop it into 1 it don't lock, this happen one day i was driving acar cut me off i stop ,then i got the problem

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmissions section. Did you check the fluid level? When was the last time the fluid & filter were replaced?

hi thanks for the reply,do you get the code the same way u get the error code for engine light,if so there are no codes

Not all scanners are capable of reading manufacturer specific transmission codes. Do you have a check engine light or a flashing O/D light?

hi thanks again, no check engine,no flashing o/d,
but in order for it to not lockup when u drop it into 1,you have to put it in reverse firstthen you drop it into 1,if you go from part to 1,it will lockup and stall

You could find used valve bodies on EBay.

I used to see epc solenoid brackets break off and let the solenoid loose which causes a stall problem. Happens mostly on 97-98 transmissions.
