ok on my 94xlt say if i was at a stop light then i just touch the gas enough to get to 2k rpms adn then when it goes to shift into second it kinda revs up i think its slipping a little bit but is that normal i mean for it to just rev a little bit then shift?? i dont think so! some of the other sysmtoms are that when i shirt from park to reverse it kinda jerks into gear!! i was thinking about doing a flush, but then i dont think that would help?? maybe? any help?? thanks!!

Idon't know about the flush, Idid it to me 91 with the same problems as you and it went out in 1 month.

all i can say to that is dammit!! i mean i guess i can change the fluid and not worry about the flush right?? i mean all i have to do to change the fluid is drop the trans. pan adn change the filter and then bolt it back in the refill right???

dont jump the gun yet i had the same problem it turned out that my fluid was low because of a malfunctioning Modulator or some thing on my tranny and this was with 202000 miles on it i took it to a transmission shop and they relplaced the part for 100 dollars and 20000 miles later my tranny is still working great.... first i would check the fluid remember it has to be driven around a little in order to get an accurate reading... good luck

When was the last time you changed your fuild, if it has been a long time, changing the fuild might mess up your seals.

it was serviced about 175 or around there i am not queit sure what they mean when they service them but what ever was done!! i am thinking abotu dropping the pan changing the fluid as well as the filter!! not to anxious for thta flush though!!

A flush is very easy to do, all the shop does is hook up a machine to one of your cooling lines, the machine does the rest.
changing the fuild yourself is also very easy, remove the pan bolts, pry off the pan, remove the filter, clean the pan, install new filter, line up the new gasket to the pan and install it.
Some tips, take care of that pan you don't want it to get bent, make sure you remove all of the old gasket from the pan, when tighting the bolts back up make sure you don't over tighten them it could cause a leak.

F.Y.I. - pulling off the pan is only a transmission service. This will not take out all of the fluid that is in your transmission.

then what will remove all that fluid in there i would like to change all of it!! ??

i dont think you can remove all of it

unless you take the whole tranny apart

well how would we find that out?

I'd start by vacuum checking the modulator..... then I'd pressure check the transmission at the line tap. It might be the modulator, as suggested, or it could be the pressure regulator.....those two tests would tell you a lot. I don't think your trannie is toast because of a shift timing problem, that is more a control (read valve body) issue.... but the modulator does come into play on this in the A4LD.

Check out the valve body rebuild thread TN_Explorer did.....he redid an A4LD...

but, easiest things first, vacuum check your modulator. Or easier yet, pull the vacuum line from it and check for presence of transmission fluid. If you find it, it is replacement time.

You CAN get all the fluid out -- but you'll need a machine to do it.

Transmission flush is when a machine is hooked up to your tranny lines and the machine pumps the new fluid in while extracting the old. We throw in a bottle of BG cleaner and such before the extraction to help clean anything out of the transmission. Then other BG fluids are put in with the new fluid to help with maintaining nice fluid and protecting the transmission. (You will need 15 qts to do the flush; and you should do this before the Transmission Service)

Transmission Service is when you drop the pan and replace the filter. Dropping the pan will dump out about 5 of the 15 quarts in your transmission. You should wash the pan out, clean the magnet (if one is present in the pan), clean off the valve bodies, and replace the gasket if it is not a re-useable gasket. After all of that, put the pan back on and replace the 5 quarts of fluid through the fill/dip-stick tube.

Hope that helps.

well i was told that i shouldn't do the flush because of the high milage on my 94xlt!! i have about 195k! like i said before though it was serviced before i got it at 175K!! so i think i might be stuck with a little service!!

trying to help

i don't know how long it has been since you posted this, but another guy on the site told me that if you add 1,keep in mind,ONE quart of motor oil it will prolong the life of the transmission and possibly regulate your shifts.keep in mind that :exporange before you put a quart of something in that you have to take a quart of something out.good luck.

One of the guys at the shop I work with has a Dodge Ram that he has motor oil in the transmission. He suspected it to last maybe 3 more months - I believe he's on 2 years now. It's a chance you take.

-Drew

ps- flushing a system that old/high mileage isn't a problem.

ok thanks for that info, but how would you go about getting that single quart out!! ??? and what if i just droped the pan changed the filter cleaned a couple things down there and then put the trans. fluid and then like a thign of motor oil??? i mean i just check the fluid level and it shows enough fluid in there but?? idk whats going on!!

I don't think your issues are that simple guy. Have you checked the modulator? Don't go chasing mouse milk fixes when you haven't exhausted some of the more plausible fixes is my advice.

ok you have caught me off guard glacier!! i dont know much aboout transmissions!! what is this modualtor you speak of?? and what about it?? i have never really been to strong with the transmissions so i would like as much info on them !!! thanks!

The modulator is a vacuum operated device that helps tell the transmission in your Explorer when to shift. It is located on the passenger side of the transmission under the rear most part of the heat shield. There is a rubber vacuum hose attached to it... if the modulator is bad, the diaphragm in it is likely ruptured. That diaphragm has transmission fluid on one side.... when it is good the trannie fluid stays on THAT side... if it is bad, the trannie fluid can actually be sucked into the engine where it is burned.... leading to a transmission fluid loss without apparent leak, and producing symptoms similar to yours. Now understand... your modulator may be fine, but I'd like to know that before I go further. SO, you ask, how do I check? Well that rubber hose, on the modulator, should not show any trace of transmission fluid..... so pull it and look. Is there any?

If all this seems mysterious to you do a search using the term modulator ot vacuum modulator.... most likely you will find pictures of it..... check that first... worst case take a drive to Sacramento and let ME look at it.
