2000 Explorer XLT
My 2000 explorer xlt has started flashing the overdrive off light and when you stop and take off again it feels like the transmission didn't shift down. Also when you are driving and get on the gas when the transmission shifts into third gear the rpms go way up and stay up until you let off the accelorator then it shifts. I took it to a good transmission shop and they check the rubber selonoids because they thought they might have got too hot and cracked, but they were fine. They also found a new code on the internet and reprogrammed a transmission sensor and nothing happened. They said the only thing left to do was gut the whole transmission. My explorer only has 54,000 miles on it. Has this happened to anyone else, and what can you do if anything?

I could tell you about 2 experiences I've had when the o/d light flashed on and off. Once I was installing my K&N fipk intake i forgot to plug in the mass air meter harness. The other occasion that was when my trans blew and what happened was the 2nd gear band broke I'm not sure what condition the other parts were in but I took it into the dealer and they replaced the whole thing.

I can tell you about lots of transmission problems. Yes my husband has a 95 Eddie Bauer with almost 300K on it. Bought it new. The first transmission went at 130K another around 200k and that one is in it now. We put in Amsoil ATF this time.

A company in Iowa rebuilt this one and they offer a lifetime warranty if you pay extra.

We thought Explorer was good before the 130 K tranny problems so found one for my daughter who lives in Atlanta. Hers is a 97 XLT with 97k on it and she called today with, guess what, a transmission problems. You search the internet and see this is a big problem with explorer transmissions. I feel bad about getting her into the time bomb Exploder but now she has to deal with the 1500-2500 repair that she will be soaked for.

Often the dealerships really screw up the transmission repair so you are better to find a good rebuild shop associated with ATRA (Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Assn) and keep your fingers crossed or find someone who has had a good experience with the transmission outfit. Our failures had all had to do with losing OD and the light blinking.

Anyone know what the warranty is for the 97 transmission? Thanks

Mine was flashing at me also, but it wasn't flashing all the time, just for a couple day's out of the week. I ended up taking it to a Ford dealership and the gasket behind to the valve body was bad and getting metal fragments into the valve body, if I would have taken it in right away I probably only would have needed a gasket, but I waited and needed to replace the whole valve body. The first thing I would do if I were u would be to take it to autozone and have them pull the code to see what's wrong w/ the computer. Mine said that the Torque converter was stuck on, but your's could be something different. Do a search for this, I started a thread about mine.
