I got a 91 Xl auto and when my engine heats up to about the normal range the transmission starts to act weird, going to school last night I went to pass a car and pushed the gas my truck didnt even move I had almost red line it to get enough speed to pass the car, it really sucked. I'm wondering why everytime my truck heats up a bit my transmisson starts the act gay, I know the trans is also hott but what could cause it to run so weird when it heats up. I'm getting the transmission flushed out today, so hopefully that will do something.
If anybody has and idea to what it causing this please help, I got 170,000 miles and I would hate to get a new or rebuilt transmission.

I'll reply to my own post then, I was looking at alldata.com and looking in the trans part for the cooler it says that the lines get cloged after a while and have to be cleaned with something called a "Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher", it also says that this could cause the explorer trans to always go out and have to be replaced all the time. http://www.alldatapro.com/alldata/P...34860071/34860072/56225824/42465507/101829619

At 170,000 miles, an overheating trans is most probably due to slipping clutch plates and/or bands. At that high a mileage, if these are slipping, it may be due to low line pressures, or a myriad of other reasons, all appropriate for the age and condition of the trannie. I doubt you are going to find some magic fix.

Well I never got the trans fluid change only beacuse I wanted to learn how to do it myself, I am enrolled in a auto class at my local college and I was wondering if I bought the right type of fluid and trans kit, I bought some Valvoline Maxlife Dexron III/Mercon fluid, and a Fram FT1115a trans kit. I'm mostly concerned about the fluid. Anyone got the answers.
Thanks.

Fluid is right, cannot comment on the filter.

Thanks I just wanted to make sure. Anyone on the filter and gasket.

I am assuming you have a 2WD because the Fram filter part number for the 2WD is 1115 while the 4WD is 1087. I have the 4WD Fram filter and gasket kit on my ex and it seems to work pretty well. The Fram is definitely larger than the Motorcraft one that was on there before. About the trans fluid, if you want to "sort-of" do a flush, drop the pan and replace the filter and gasket and fill up the pan with about 3.5 quarts. In a week do the same again, but without replacing the gasket and filter. Repeat until the fluid becomes nice and red again. Costco has a case of Chevron ATF, which is some pretty good stuff, for about $12, or $1 per quart.

Also if you want to get any additives, don't get Slick 50 ATF treatment. At $10 for a bottle, it is some really thick goop that has no benefit whatsoever. However, I added a bottle of SeaFoam Trans-Tune and it has definitely made a difference, as the tranny seems to shift firmer now.

One last piece of advice, don't forget to put the o-rings on the filter, I learned that the hard way and had to take off the pan again just to put those damn o-rings on!

Thanks I just wanted the flush to go good, I didnt want to get the wrong kit, I got wrong spark plugs before, I dont know how they mess this stuff up they got a PC, as for the flush I got everything I need at my school, so it should come out pretty good. Thanks for the tips I am going to use that SeaFoam Trans-Tune stuff and I won't forget the O-rings.
I'm thinking of getting the B&M shift plus to also fix my hard shift problems anyone got this on there X right now, tell me how it works and where it connects thanks. Also is it worth buying it.

How many miles on this trannie?

170,000 I know its old but I'm trying to get the most of it, I won't replace it till it won't even move.

If your fluid has never been changed in 170k miles I would not recommend it. If it has been done every 30-50k then its ok but if it hasn't then adding new fluid could ballon the rubber seals and cause leaks which will lead to dead trans.

Forget any shift kit additions.

No I had many trans fliud changes and flushes this is just the first time that I am going to do it myself. I got tired of paying so much. I would be a retard to not change it with 170,000 miles on it.
Glacier991 Forget any shift kit additions. Why is this I would think putting the B&m shift plus would be a good thing, also its not a shift kit and some thing that connect to the computer and improves shifts, I think.

Your shift problems are probably due more to hardened seals and worn parts than anything. A shift kit, is like giving an 80 year old man expensive vitamins and expecting him to bench press 200 lbs and then screw a bevy of 20 year olds. Ain't a gonna happen.

Most of the 1st gens with 170k miles, are on their 2nd or 3rd tranny by now.

I know I consider myself very lucky. :bounce:

Oh, and getting a tranny cooler is never a bad idea, but i've heard bad things about shift kits.

I got the rebuild, on 7/14/04, now today its acting up again, my truck kept turning off then the tranny started to slip. As I got home and parked my truck I smelled the tranny fuild like if it was burning up. There was a puddle of tranny fuild under my truck after sitting for about 10 sec. I checked the dip stick and some of the fuild was black or brown looking. I looked under the trans and couldn't tell where it was leaking from, just that it was all over the place.
Do you guys have any ideas to what happened? Also can my trans make my engine turn off, it kept going to low rpm's in drive and would stay reg in park.
