I have a 97 Explorer XLT with 51,000 miles on it. I have just started to notice a problem with the transmission. When I’m driving in town at speeds between 38-45mph. As soon as I hit 38mph the transmission goes into overdrive and the rpm’s drop to 1200. This is fine as long as I keep a constant speed. But if I try to lightly accelerate the transmission will stutter and vibrate the entire truck. It’s almost like the transmission is not sure if it wants to stay in overdrive or drop down a gear. If I drive the truck with the O/D off switch activated I don’t have any problems, but as soon as I turn it off and the tranny shifts in to O/D, I start getting the vibrations. But if I give it a lot of gas and it downshifts, it’s fine. I pull my dragcar with my XLT and the tranny works great. It doesn’t slip or shift funny, so I don’t think that it has anything to do with the tranny internals. Could there be a solenoid or an electric valve in the tranny that could be going bad? I have not changed the tranny fluid since I have had the truck, and I don’t think the previous owner did either. Besides changing the fluid, what else should I do? Thanks.

I'm not sure about '97 models but...

if it has a Throttle valve cable then check/adjust it. Mine is adjustable on the driver's side at the firewall.
