Hello all, I have an 03' explorer with 108,000 miles. I bought it used with about 62k miles from a ford dealer. I dont know if they ever did a tranny flush on the truck, but I know that my tranny is starting to act up. Its sluggish when you want to take off, and when you stop at a stop sign and then go, it feels like the tranny kicks into second right away. I know dodge has these problems and its electronic. I was wondering, can it be something electrical with the tranny, so is it that the tranny fluid is just sooooo burnt up, that the tranny is doing funcky things.

Now if I do decide to do the tranny flush, is it going to be a pain? I havent looked under there in while, nor did I ever really pay attention to the tranny when I was down there. Will this improve this situation?

Also I have read, that if it was never done, dont bother, it will create problems, but how much more worse can it get if I already have problems.

BTW, taking it to a tranny shop and spending all that money is out of the question, I was planning on getting a new vechile anyways after the winter season.

Automatic transmissions need clean fluid to work properly. The filter could be partially clogged. The solenoid blocks on these models tend to act up around 60K miles, so it's possible that you might eventually need a new one. Replace the fluid & the filter first, and see if it helps. The next step would be the solenoid block.

not trying to threadjack...

It seems that my wife's 02 Mercury Mountainer 4.0V6 AWD 78k is having tranny problems, she has had it since 38k never has had anything done. It seems to be slipping & if driven nicely with o/d off it works ok, I have replaced Fluid/Filter & it still has the issue. I am fairly competent but still a hobbyest I borrowed an obd II code reader & it shows error code P0745 Pressure control solenoid a. I am just double checking myself, I have read numerous posts on this problem & it seems that I need to replace the solenoid body. I have one question how do I identify which tranny is has 5R55 S or W?
Thank you,

Gary
(not to computer savvay)What ever happened to vacuum controlled tranny's?

what is the difficulty in changing the fluids and filter on the tranny? is it like the regular oil in the car?

playtilithrtz: The only difficulty with changing/adding tranny fluid is that you have to pump it up through the pan, not too difficult with the right equipment.

pay the $170 and take it to the dealer to get a trany service. Fixed mine right up, low on fluid.

okay great... thanx for the advice. im going to see if i feel like doing it this weekend, if not then i will have to salvage some money and pay to get it done. (damn wedding expensices is sucking up all my extra cash)
