Transmission problem!

My new explorer which is a 1997 v8 awd, when in any gear except drive it runs, when put in droveit goes in gear but will not move, it workdsin low and every other gear includin reverse, could this be a possible main shaft broken? this is my fourth explorer and this has never occured, this is my ride to work every morning and my daaad works all the time so no help anymore.. kind regARDS sidney.

Check the range sensor, and the pressure in each gear range with a 0 - 300 PSI test gauge. You might have an out of alignment shift cable or a valve body issue. Did you check the fluid level? Did you ever replace the fluid & filter?

The guy i bought it fromsaid he thought it was a transfer case. Story says he ran out of gas and it was towed and ever since then it hasnt ran. we put a new transwer case and its having the above symptoms. if buying a new trans can be avoided id love that. Problem is im only nineteen and the only kind of thing iknow how to work on is cnc machines lol... my dad has helpedi know the small things, like buying a new trans and putting it in but vacationweek is coming and i wont have the extra money for onr.

Start with the simple things first such as checing the fluid level.

Where does the tester hook up to? also it was pulled onto the tow truck in gear, what problems could that have caused. where can i get a tester?

also seems as if the shaft that hangs out the end that goes into the TC wiggles a lil more than should!

Towing an automatic with the drive shaft turning and the engine not running can cause serious problems. Usually only if it's a long distance. Without the engine running, the pump in the trans isn't pumping, therefor not cooling or lubricating, even though parts are still turning in the transmission. Thats why wrecker drivers are supposed to remove the driveshaft if they have to tow with the drive wheels on the pavement. Doesn't sound good to me. Maybe some clutch packs in there have melted together, I think in other tranny's reverse and 2nd are in one pack and 1st and 3rd in another?
