Transmission Problems

Hi I am new and as usual need help.


My poor baby is having problems shifting; she is a 94 xlt 4X4. From a stop when the R’s get to around 3, I have to feather the gas to get her to shift. After that no problem until I have to start from a stop again. I don’t want to take it to the tranny shop and be told the usual “u need to rebuild”. Anyone have any ideas or
is there a related post I can read. It all started with driving about 30mph over Mt. hood and the RPM’s would raise as if my tires were slipping and only once in a while? One the way home then I realized the shifting problem, but she got us home. Thanks for any help!!!!!!

Welcome to this forum! Do do have this problem only when it's cold, then slowly goes away as it starts to warm up? It could be several things, such as the governor, modulator, valve body gaskets, low oil level, loose valve body bolts, band adjustment, servo pistons, clogged filter, etc. More information would be required to determine what is wrong.

It has this problem even when at operation temp, I checked the fluid looks clean and at operation level.?

I also did the filter and most of the oil about 6 months ago.

Is it mostly when downshifting, or upshifting? Did you check your kickdown cable?

The 1-2 shift seems to be your problem. That shift uses the intermediate band, which is applied by a servo on the side of the case by the CAT.

I suspect you either have a) a burned and/or glazed band; b) a bad servo (they get fried by the CAT and leak and hence fail to apply adequate pressure to properly engage the band, or; c) a broken intermediate band.

a and b are tasks you can do and do not require a teardown. c required a removal and rebuild.

I cannot offer any personal experience, and I am always hesitant to repeat anything negative... but in the case of Jasper I have not heard any thing negative and many positive comments.
