i have a 1997 ford explorer that i bought off a buddy for $200 bucks with a new motor in it with less than 80000 miles and the transmission went out thats how i got it for 200 i was wondering how do i tel if it is a 5r55e or a 4r55e. the motor runs great i think the clutch bands are stretched because if i revit up to 2000rpms it will go and it will move in reverse no problem .

If its a v6 and 97 you have a 5 speed 5r55e. Before you implicate anything, don't skip the obvious and check your fluid level/quality. May even be worth to drop the pan and change the filter if your buddy didn't already try that.......

Good reverse & slipping or no forward on an Exploder with that kind of mileage is usually an internal transmission problem, sounds like forward clutches gone.
The easiest way to tell a 5R from 4R is to look on the top of case at the left rear by the extension housing & see if there's a speed sensor. if so it's a 5R, if not it's a 4R.
