1998 Ford Explorer XLT
I have a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT, with the 4.0 SOHC, I am not sure of the transmission type, I can get that if needed, but here is the problem. I bought this explorer from a girl in her early 20's, she said the explorer has transmission problems. It was sitting at a local jiffy lube, so I wen there to talk to them about the vehicle. The service manager said that the vehicle is in great condition, but he thought that the transmission need to be replaced. He said they found metal filings in the fluid...So I got to thinking this could be a great project. he also said theat the vehicle would not go into gear. But the girl I bought it from said that it would go into gear, but it seemed like 2nd gear only she said...

So I put it onto a trailer, having to winch it on, because I could not get it to move in gear, brought it home, and did some pondering...

If the transmission went all the way out, something major had to happen, but that does not usually happen. I checked the fluid, it has Mercon V, and noticed that there is metal flaking in the fluid, kinda like glitter, but there are not any big pieces, and it is really hard to see even under lighted conditions.

So then I noticed that the check engine light was on, so I thought that I would disconnect the battery to reset the computer, this usually works well if you have an idiot light that will not go out. So I did, and in doing so I thought that I after I reconnectted the battery I would see if the vehicle would go into gear, and wouldn't you know it, it did, so I drove it to the end of the driveway (20 ft) then put it reverse and went backward (20 ft), then thought I would drive it around the block, I did, but as i was doing this I noticed the transmission was slipping real bad. So I stopped, put it in park, then put it back into gear, but it would not move again. So I disconnectted the battery again, reconnectted it again and drove it as fast as I could to the house, and back into the garage....

So this is were my problem is, is there anyone out here that may have heard of this problem, and what the symptoms might be? Any help will be appreciated. I did notice one other thing, the trans fluid is a little over full, maybe 1/2 an inch above the crosshairs, even after it is warmed up...
