I have a 97 Mountaineer with 375,000 miles. Original motor and trans. History, the trans has been flushed 3 times in its life and pan pulled once and fluid changed. Lately it has bend shifting funny. It acts like it isn't in overdrive but it is if you hit the od button. When it works correctly my RPM's are about 2200 at 70 MPA. When it works crazy it will be 3000 at 60-65. Touch the OD bottom they jump to 3500. I can start and moanually shift thought the gears 1,2,3 od they all shift still RPM's are to high. Then all of a sudden they go back down. It might be 5 miles it might be 50 before it works right. I took it to the shop (of course it work flawless that day) They pulled the pan said very clean looked like a new one no clutch material in pan. What do you all think.

Sounds like the torque converter is not locking up. Post up some more info like which engine & transmission you have, etc. Is the O/D OFF light flashing when you drive?

The OD light is not blinking. This is a 2 wheel drive 5.0L engine. Not sure what trans is in it. The Trans. shop didn't rule out converter. But also said there was no junk in the pan that would suggest the converter was coming a part.

Could just be a shift solenoid too.

Trans problems

I had a code from my ecu saying I had a bad shift solenoid, after buying a new solenoid and dropping the pan, I noticed that my wiring harness was no good. Wires cracked and possibly touching. I would check that before you buy anything, because it will still throw a bad code. I found one on eBay for $27 shipped.

P.s. I did put the new shift solenoid in and still get the same code. Hope this helps.

P.s.s. I'll let you know what happens when I get the wiring harness installed.

I'm sitting here stunned that you have 375k on the original drivetrain. That's excellent!
