Transmission problems

Hi..

I am having a problem with my 98 Explorer 4.0 V6 XLT 4x4.

The car can't move on its own.
If the engine is just started, it can move a little bit both forward and backwards but it only last for a few seconds.
Then it is put in to gear, the engine is not dropping in RPM as i am used to.
Then the engine is started, i can hear a faint rattling for around 10 seconds, but if put in to gear right away, the rattling stops.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
Am i having torque converter problem? Gearbox problem?

How's the fluid look? Level? Color? Smell? Metallic fines present?
Let us know.
P.S. not much to go on, but torque converter or low fluid comes to mind.

Also how many miles on the unit, and any pertinent service history would be helpful also.

Hi again

The car has done 130000 miles. The transmission fluid and filter have been changed for every 40-50000 miles. Latest 15000 miles ago. The fluid is now very dark, almost black. It does not smell burnt. The fluid level is full. I have not noticed metal In the oil. I haven't drained it yet

I think it hasn't been running correct for some time. Often it have had problems going to overdrive. If i let off the gas, it mostly engage overdrive, but it is very sensitive to disengage overdrive.

Clisse, thanks for the additional info. OK, what I suspect is your torque converter clutch system is failing, and that is often misunderstood as not going into overdrive. Have it scanned with a pro level scan tool, and I would wager you read code P0741. If you want a little more info on this fault, do a search in the transmission sub-forum for my thread "Trial By Fire".

I have just borrowed a cheap code reader, and it comes up with error P1762 and P1763.

For what i can see, it is a overdrive band failure. Will that effect all gears?
