Which engine?

There was no 4-cylinder engine in a 99 Explorer. Read the VIN off the door label, dash corner, or simply your insurance card, and post the 8th character (it will be a letter, X, E, or P). This letter identifies the engine.

Its a four cylinder is all I know

I guess it is a four liter with the 5R55E transmission. Not really enough info provided but likely the torque converter. OP have you had it hooked up to a scanner to check for trouble codes?

I used my crystal ball!
