Transmission question on 2000XLT

Ok, i don't know when the last time was that my Transmission fluid was changed. my truck has 94K on it bought it last november with 48K on it. I hear allot of people saying that after they did the transmission fluid the transmission blew up. so what should i do

1. change the fluid and filter

2. change only the fluid

3. change nothing

Also when the transmission goes what happens with ford, do they just slip?

I would (1) drop pan and change filter (2) completely flush the entire complement of ATF while adding new synthetic ATF. (3) add an external filter.
