1992 XLT 4x4
Ok i know this isnt the smartest of questions but i just bought a 1992 XLT 4x4 form my friend. It has a vacuum line off and I believe it is the one for the trasmission because it will not go into 4x4 either. But to my question, where is the vacuum line hole on the transmission located as in fron or real or which side or what. I got under and looked for it and i couldnt find it and the chilton manual really doesnt cover transmissions. Any help is apreciated.

Depends on the transmission, but if its the A4LD its located onthe passenger side above the pan and goes on the modultor valve. Its a round shiny thing usually gold toned if that helps. Hard to see, but you can usually feel it.

thats the one that runs strait down, i found that one but it comes down and has nothing connected to it, where is it suppose to go? It comes from the vacuum regulator then down and is an open tube.

Hmmmm....thats the only vacuum tube in that area that I know about. Is it possible its the vent tube for the transmission? They are about the same size black rubber hose. If so, it goes on top of the trans near the back. This is strictly a guess.

will i have that "vacuum distributer" so to speak on the driver side of the engine. It has 1 hose missing and there is one that goes to the transmission and since that would cause it not to go into 4x4 im guessing its that one, but if its a vacuum tube it should be connected to the tranny somewhere. All i see is the tube running down then then end of it. Nothing is connected to the end of the line on the transmission side. Is there supposed to be?

I don't know what 4X4 has to do with vacuum, unless you have one of those few years that had vacuum front hubs. I am not familiar enough to know what years they were (I thought later ones).

Oh, do you have a manual shift t-case or an electric? The hose and the 4X4 may not be related. I am sorry, but we are getting ahead of what I know about your year model. Hopefully some of the pros around here will jump in about now. They know this stuff.

i have the push button 4x4.

From what I read over the years there is probably a short in the wiring or the shift motor is bad. I think some of the older ones had a reset on the control box, but I have no clue where to look in an X for one. In the ranger it was behind the seat.

Where are the experts tonight?

well im pretty sure that its the vacuum line considering one is missing on the vacuum line distributor. I just dont know what it is suppose to look like.

4x4 probably unrelated

The 4x4 not working is probably unrelated to the vacuum line. The electric motor or solenoid that engages the transfer case goes bad, happened on mine. I had it torn down and the brushes replaced in the motor, surprisingly wasn't too expensive.

Brian, to the best of my knowledge the PVH hubs were only used on the Rangers from -98 through mid -99. I don't think the Explorers ever had them.

Oh ok, now I know. Thanks.

trentw2323, did you ever figure out your vacuum hose situation? I'm a little uncertain as to what you're missing. You should have a vacuum hose going from the vacuum distribution tree on the intake manifold down to the vacuum regulator on the side of the transmission. If that hose is missing, then the transmission won't shift properly from 1-2-3. Does the transmission seem to shift correctly? Vacuum has nothing to do with the 4WD system. On my '92, one of the ports on the vacuum tree is an extra and is capped off. It seems somewhat common for people to lose these caps. If you can account for all of the vacuum operated accesories, then you may just need a cap.

Im trying to find the vacuum regulator on the side of the transmission, i dont know what side or where it is. Also if the 4x4 is unrelated then i have another question. The low range is always lit up on this one, is this where its suppose to be, or are no lights suppose to be on for regular driving. Also, when i push the 4x4 button nothing happens, no noise from the transfer case or anything. Does that relate to the motor you were talking about now. And one other thing, i know this list is getting long, but i just went and drove it, and every once in a while at a dewad stop it will kick itself out of drive and reverse and goto nuetral, what causes this. Sorry for the list.

4x4

Neither of the 4wd lights should be on when regular driving. If the motor goes bad, quits engaging the transfer case, nothing will happen when you push the button. For a while my 4wd would only work after it had warmed up good, then it wouldn't at all. As far as the transmission...sounds like the good ol' AL4D to me. :D

As Brian_B said, the vacuum modulator is located on the passenger side of the transmission, above the pan, right where the catalytic converter passes by. It's said that there is an access panel just underneath the passenger front seat to get at the vacuum modulator.

Low fluid level could cause the transmission to drop out of gear like that.

No response from the transfer case when you push the button could be a problem with the shift motor. The 4Low light being on could also be in the shift motor. The shift motor has a mechanism (don't know specifics) that tell it which position the shift motor is in. If it erroneously thinks it's in 4L, it may not do anything because it doesn't know where it's at.
