2002 Explorer XLT
Hello Everyone!

I am am the new owner of an 02 Explorer XLT. Driving it last weekend i noticed a few hesitations between shifting gears while on freeway so i took it my transmission guy for service....

He called me and said that there is metal on the magnent and that the tranny is at the end of its life and i probably only have a few hundred more miles left to go. This doesent make sense to me because other than the very occasional hesitation to shift between gears it seems to be working fine (no slip ect).

My question is how long does this transmission typically last and what will i start to see happening typically when it actually fails. Also, what can i expect to pay for a rebuild and is it difficult to remove the tranny myself at home just to help offset the cost.

Thanks!!!

Ken

Hey guero6371, I bought my '02 Explorer XLT with 86K on it. At 104k, the tranny started acting up all the sudden. End result was the tranny had lost 2 out of the 5 gears, and another was on its way out. I had two different people look at it and got the same answer. I ended up going to a local shop that does nothing but trannys(which is always better). He gave me two options, replace it with a rebuilt transmission for $2200...and no guarantees after 12 mths. OR...replace it with 'remanufactured' tranny from JASPER transmissions for $3300 that has a 3yr 100k warranty and 100% coverage and no deductibles. I went with the remanufactured Jasper because they make the trannys BETTER than Ford did. They completely rework it. I went this route because I've heard too many nightmares about owners on their 3RD transmission with the miles you have on yours now. For a little extra dough I feel I made the right choice. I now have 118K on my Explorer and no problems. Goodluck with yours!

i have an 03 mounty v8 and i get some hesitation when i feather the throttle but when im not in "granny mode" it shifts perfectly. I pull large trailers with my mounty and never have any slipping.

also when my a/c is on it shifts at a higher rpm. does this make any sense to anyone?
