What does a Transmission Master Kit consist of and can the basic "do-it-yourself" mechanic install it? I have the tranny out right now while rebuilding my engine. I would like to "tune it up" before installing it. Any help would be appreciated!

Kids dont try this at home

Please dont try this , This trans. is the worst head ache you could ever imagine.Take it from me I am asst mngr at A tranny shop. You might read my reply to (offroader 69 me) topic tranny.Keep on exploring ,Thanks: Tracy

You didn't mention whether your transmission was a manual or automatic. If it's automatic, then I agree, don't mess with it, take it to a pro to be rebuilt.

If it's a manual, they're not too difficult. I haven't had an Explorer trans apart, but I've rebuilt a couple other manual transmissions.

I'm about to rebuild my own manual trans. Has anyone been inside an explorer manual tranny?

Here's some links on the Explorer transmissions I have:

If you have an auto trans, it is an A4LD. Beginning about halfway thru the 93 model year, Ford strengthened and modified the A4LD. That's why you hear more trans trouble with the 91-92 model years than with 93-94's, among the 91-94 Explorers.

So..if you order a new A4LD, it will be better than the one that was in it...

Of course if you have a manual trans then you have either the Mitsu or Mazda trans.

If you know what you are doing regarding rebuilding a trans then by all means go for it. Perhaps some of the above sites can help you out; in either case, if I were rebuilding or replacing my trans, I would soup it up while in the process. It won't cost much more to put in high quality servos and torque converter and plates and whatever else is in a trans.
