I have a 97 mountaineer with the 4R70W Transmission how do I get the two upper transmission-to-engine bolts out ? Do I have to take the center console out ?

I used some long extensions and maybe a u joint and went up over the top of the trans.

Yup, a 2-3 foot extension and a swivel socket.

cool thanks for the help

All the extensions I had, plus a swivel and a wobble...lol

I also took the centre console out as the hatch was really handy, particularly getting the new tranny in. Snaking in from underneath with your 4 foot extension, your head where the xfr case used to be, a helper inside can guide the socket onto the bolts from above, instead of trying to do it semi-blind yourself, from underneath.

I cant remember what else it helped with, maybe the tranny cooler lines, but i do remember thinking how glad I was that I removed the console and used the hatch.

If you lower the tail of the trans a bit it makes it easier to get in there.
